Kyle Walker - Bee More Manchester - 011
I don’t know how to start this piece without saying Kyle Walker, but not that one. So I won’t...
The namesake of the current Manchester City right back, Kyle, is one of those guys that you just can’t not get along with. One of THE genuinely funny, die hard Man City fans around.
Based in Media City, the lad from Fallowfield puts on what can only be described as a daily comedy show across his social media channels, from talking all things football to ripping apart the cast of Love Island.
His 'same meme - multiple captions', is a personal favourite of mine, as well as the Uber rating and feedback videos he does, while still riding in the back of the Uber he’s reviewing…
It’s not been an easy journey to get to where he is today, but I genuinely think this is just the beginning for him.
For those that aren’t familiar with the series, I’ve decided to do a take on ‘Humans of New York’ but for people who call Manchester home.
Bee more MCR will try and tell the story of this incredible city and all the people of Manchester, #peopleofmcr, who contribute to it being the fastest growing city in Europe.
So how does this work? I will get each person to tell me their story in their own words of how they got to where they are today. I will share that story along with some photos for context.
Each person featured will then be asked the same question – Why Manchester?
Kyle grew up in Fallowfield which if you’re not from Manchester, is the student area for living when you attend Manchester University.
Kyle originally trained as an actor at Manchester Academy and attended sessions at Contact Theatre until he got to 15 when he had to choose his options.
Sport has always been a huge part of Kyle’s life, to the point where he was going to be a PE teacher, but he focused on drama making the Young Actors Company at the Contact Theatre.
After leaving school, Kyle eventually moved to Loretto College where he started to apply for the drama schools he wanted to go to.
Being competitive, Kyle didn’t get in on his first attempt.
He decided to go to the drama school he wanted to attend anyway for a year, doing a foundation course a couple of nights a week. This was in between working full time at the Contact Theatre box office and the retail outlet Republic in the Trafford Centre.
“I don’t know what it was, but I knew that I didn’t want a job where I’d have to wear the same thing everyday.”
This pretty much sums Kyle up for me. He’s so determined and focused to make his own way, saying yes to the right opportunities and not working for ‘the man’ has got him to where he is today.
Kyle eventually went to ALRA where he was in the year above Bee More MCR’s Episode 5, Ryan Clayton!
Kyle had the best 3 years of his life at ARLA, before taking on a number of different jobs to pay his way, while auditioning for full time roles. Anything he enjoyed he would take on, just to bring money in.
In January 2015, he had an out of the blue message from an acting profile website, from Blue Moon Rising TV. This is the production company linked to our childhood club Man City backed by Freemantle Media.
While working on projects for Blue Moon Rising, he eventually got a call from City TV, the in house media team at Man City, asking him to come and do a secret project. Kyle couldn’t make it due to work commitments and was gutted.
Luckily, the contact at City TV convinced him to make it work so he could be a part of the video. The Next thing, Kyles climbing into the back of a black cab in the Northern Quarter with Pep Guardiola.
The video went well, to the point where he managed to pick up more presenting and events work with Man City. This included the Kyle Walker intro video when he was signed to Man City from Tottenham.
Having seen this content, Sport Bible reached out to work with Kyle. This led to Kyle interviewing people like Tiger Woods.
Word of mouth is key in the entertainment industry, but Kyle kept building his network slowly and consistently to be offered the roles that he is getting now.
During an outside broadcast for Man City, Kyle was approached by a producer from BBC Radio Manchester who asked him to come in for an interview. Several demos and interviews later, Kyle was offered a show on the air.
Thursday nights 7pm until 10pm you can hear Kyle on the “Dead Good Show”.
A recent weekend for Kyle involved finishing BBC Radio Manchester on a Friday night before travelling down to London. He was then on Soccer AM’s sister show “Saturday Social” on Saturday morning, before being taken to Craven Cottage to cover the game for Radio 5 Live. That same afternoon he was on the BBC’s Football Focus, for a piece he had done with Man City’s Benjamin Mendy and Riyad Mahrez, before waking up on Sunday Morning in a hotel room in London, to see himself on Match of the Day…
Kyle still talks about these opportunities with a sense of shock and surprise, given how down to earth he is. But this is the only bit that people see, almost like the iceberg effect. All the hard work is the bit you don’t see.
Confidence is key, Kyle was told off for talking too much at school, but now he’s making a living off his ability to talk to anyone.
When asked why Manchester, Kyle admits that Manchester is home, there’s plenty of opportunities in London given what he does for a living, but he says it’s the people that make it.
He asks rhetorically why would he want to leave this city? When the sun's shining, Manchester is the greatest city in the world. So that 30 minutes we get a year, we’re on top of the world.
Make sure you follow Kyle on social media @kylewalker115 . Really appreciate Kyle taking the time out of a busy schedule to sit down with me for this interview. I genuinely believe this is just the start for him as he focuses in on what he enjoys doing the most in life.
